Skincare Alert: Why Dermatologists Warn That Multani Mitti Can Be a ‘Double-Edged Sword’

Multani mitti, or Fuller’s Earth, is a popular natural skincare remedy known for its cleansing, exfoliating, and nourishing properties, especially in South Asia. However, dermatologists caution that its use is not suitable for everyone and must be matched to individual skin types.

Dr. Jatin Mittal, co-founder and cosmetologist at Abhivrit Aesthetics, explained that Multani mitti is highly beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin due to its absorbent properties, which help soak up excess oil, unclog pores, and prevent acne breakouts. It also has a cooling effect that can soothe inflammation and irritation caused by acne.

Despite these benefits, prolonged use of Multani mitti can strip the skin of natural oils, leading to dryness and flakiness, according to Dr. Rinky Kapoor, a consultant dermatologist at The Esthetic Clinics in Mumbai. Dr. Mittal also emphasized that those with dry or sensitive skin should be cautious, as the same absorbent qualities can aggravate conditions like eczema or rosacea, causing redness, flakiness, and damaging the skin’s barrier.

Dr. Mittal advised that people with combination skin should apply Multani mitti only to oily areas, such as the T-zone, to avoid drying out other parts of the face. He further stressed that understanding your skin type is key, and using Multani mitti without considering this can do more harm than good.

In conclusion, while Multani mitti has numerous benefits for certain skin types, dermatologists recommend consulting a skincare professional to ensure its use is tailored to your skin’s specific needs, thereby preventing potential skin damage.
