Tumbbad Director Rahi Anil Barve Will Not Return for Sequel; Focuses on Trilogy Including Pahadpangira and Pakshitirtha

Rahi Anil Barve, director of the critically acclaimed Tumbbad, has announced that he will not be involved in the film’s sequel. This comes just days after producer and lead actor Sohum Shah revealed plans to continue the franchise, following the re-release of Tumbbad in theatres on September 13.

Barve, who directed the original 2018 film, shared on social media that he is currently focused on completing a trilogy of films, which includes Tumbbad, Pahadpangira, and Pakshitirtha. He described Tumbbad as exploring “the greed of patriarchy,” while Pahadpangira will deal with themes of feminism and the satipratha tradition. The third and final film in the trilogy, Pakshitirtha, will conclude the story.

In his post, Barve wished Sohum Shah and co-director Adesh Prasad the best for the upcoming Tumbbad II, expressing confidence in its success. Shah responded to Barve’s post, congratulating him on his upcoming projects Gulkanda and Raktabrahmand and encouraging him to start work on Pahadpangira soon.

Barve revealed plans to begin production on Pahadpangira in March 2025, following the completion of his current projects. Meanwhile, Tumbbad, which originally explored the story of Vinayak Rao’s descent into greed in search of a mythical treasure, has garnered Rs 13.44 crore during its re-release at the domestic box office, surpassing its original 2018 earnings.
