India’s run in the prestigious Sudirman Cup 2025 came to a disappointing end on Monday as they lost 1-4 to a dominant Indonesian side in their final Group C encounter in China. Despite a promising start to the campaign, the Indian team failed to progress to the knockout stages.
The only win for India came in the men’s doubles match, where Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty showed their class, defeating the Indonesian pair in a high-intensity match. However, the team fell short in all the other categories including men’s singles, women’s singles, and both mixed doubles and women’s doubles.
Head coach Pullela Gopichand stated, “This tournament has highlighted key areas we need to improve in, especially in women’s and mixed doubles. We’re proud of our players’ efforts, but more consistent training and strategic planning are required.”
India’s early exit has raised questions about team selection, lack of depth in women’s badminton, and inconsistent performances in team events. With major tournaments like the Asian Games and Paris Olympics qualifiers on the horizon, the Badminton Association of India is expected to revisit its approach to team preparation.
