Har Gobind Khorana: The Indian Scientist Who Cracked the Genetic Code

Har Gobind Khorana, an Indian-American biochemist, is celebrated for his groundbreaking work in deciphering the genetic code, a discovery that revolutionized the field of molecular biology. Born in Raipur, Punjab (now in Pakistan) in 1922, Khorana’s remarkable contributions to science earned him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1968, which he shared with Robert W. Holley and Marshall W. Nirenberg.

Khorana’s Nobel-winning research focused on how the sequence of nucleotides in DNA determines the structure of proteins. His pioneering work demonstrated that the genetic code is made up of sets of three nucleotides, known as codons, which correspond to specific amino acids. This discovery laid the foundation for understanding how genetic information is translated into the proteins that govern all biological functions.

Khorana’s scientific journey was marked by perseverance and intellectual curiosity. After completing his early education in British India, he moved abroad to pursue higher studies, earning a PhD from the University of Liverpool. He later worked in Switzerland before moving to the United States, where he conducted his landmark research.

In addition to his work on the genetic code, Khorana was instrumental in synthesizing the first artificial gene, a feat that opened new avenues in genetic engineering and biotechnology. His innovations have had far-reaching impacts on medicine, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals.

Despite his immense achievements, Khorana remained humble and dedicated to his work. He continued his research and teaching at prestigious institutions, including the University of Wisconsin and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), inspiring future generations of scientists.

Har Gobind Khorana passed away in 2011, leaving behind a legacy of scientific excellence that continues to influence modern biology. His contributions not only advanced our understanding of life at the molecular level but also demonstrated the power of science to transform human knowledge and health.
