Nothing’s next open earbuds, Ear Open, may rival the recently launched AirPods 4, known for their open-ear design and active noise cancellation (ANC). While there are plenty of truly wireless earbuds (TWS) on the market, few feature an open-ear design with ANC, due to the difficulty in achieving effective noise cancellation without a proper ear seal. Nothing seems ready to tackle this challenge, with the Ear Open set for release on September 24.
The Ear Open is expected to be an upgrade of the Nothing Ear (Stick), the company’s first wireless earbuds without ear tips, similar to the AirPods 4. The previous model lacked ANC, but the new version may introduce this feature, making it one of the few open-ear TWS with noise cancellation.
The upcoming Ear Open is anticipated to offer premium features, such as support for high-resolution audio codecs, long battery life, and compatibility with both Android and iOS devices. It will also have deeper integration with Nothing smartphones. While AirPods 4 can be used with Android devices, some functions are limited. Achieving ANC in open-ear earbuds is more complex than in closed-ear designs due to the challenge of creating a soundproof seal, but Nothing aims to meet this challenge with their new product.
