The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Pune is planning to introduce four zebras—two males and two females—for the first time, with preparations for their arrival well underway. A 5,000-square-metre trench is almost complete, with only 20% of the work remaining. The zoo authorities are working on a feasibility report after a recent site visit to assess the potential for introducing zebras to the facility.
Rajkumar Jadhav, director of Katraj Zoo, stated that the project is in its initial stages and will take about a year to complete. The goal is to diversify the zoo’s wildlife collection by introducing the Grant’s species of zebras, which will be juveniles. He expects this addition to boost visitor numbers, raising both conservation awareness and the zoo’s appeal to locals and tourists.
Ashok Ghorpade, superintendent of the garden department, noted that the distinctive black-and-white stripes of the zebras are expected to fascinate visitors of all ages and add to the zoo’s natural beauty. The zoo’s advisory committee is finalizing its report, with expectations that the zebra exhibit will soon become a key attraction in Pune.
