Sunita Ahuja Reflects on Challenges Post-Marriage to Govinda: Cultural Differences, Restrictions, and a Secret Wedding

Sunita Ahuja, wife of actor Govinda, recently opened up about the challenges she faced after their marriage, including cultural differences and restrictions. Speaking on the Time Out with Ankit podcast, Sunita shared that she married Govinda at the age of 18, and their daughter Tina was born just a year later. She recalled the lifestyle changes she experienced, saying she transitioned from wearing miniskirts to sarees after the marriage. “I would remind him, ‘I’m from Bandra, you’re from Virar,’ and he’d respond, ‘No, my mother won’t like it,’” she said, highlighting the differences in their upbringings.

Sunita also mentioned that Govinda, despite being comfortable with his female co-stars wearing short clothes in films, didn’t want her to dress similarly. Reflecting on their relationship, she noted, “If there’s anyone he loves after his mother, it’s me. I’ve been with him through thick and thin, even before he became a superstar. There must be a reason we’ve stayed together for 40 years. You don’t often hear of relationships lasting this long nowadays.”

She also recounted how Govinda was absent during the birth of their daughter, as he had scheduled five film shoots on the same day. “My mother-in-law was with me, and he kept checking in after each shift. Tina was born during his third shift of the day,” she shared, admitting she didn’t realize at the time how big of a star Govinda was.

Sunita further revealed that they kept their marriage secret for a year due to concerns that a hero’s career might suffer if he was no longer perceived as single. “That was the trend back then, but once Tina was born, everyone found out about our marriage,” she added. The couple, who tied the knot in 1987, have two children, Tina and Yashvardhan.
