The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been eliminated from the IPL 2025 playoffs race, marking a disappointing end to their campaign. Once considered a dominant force in the Indian Premier League, the five-time champions have struggled with a series of misfortunes throughout the season. Their failure to make it to the playoffs is attributed to various factors, including auction-related missteps and an overreliance on veteran players.
CSK’s latest defeat, a crushing loss to the Punjab Kings, sealed their exit from the competition. Despite putting up a competitive total of 190 runs, CSK faltered towards the end, losing six wickets for just 18 runs. Punjab Kings chased the target down easily, with CSK unable to build on their solid position in the middle overs. Yuzvendra Chahal’s four-wicket haul, including a hat-trick, played a pivotal role in CSK’s collapse.
Captain MS Dhoni admitted that the team had failed to capitalize on key moments in the game. He stressed the importance of playing through the full quota of overs, especially in high-pressure matches where momentum can swing unexpectedly.
The team’s performance this season has also been hindered by a lack of consistency in the batting order. With a run rate of just 8.23, CSK’s batting has been ineffective, particularly in the top and middle orders. Several key players, including Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, Shivam Dube, and Rahul Tripathi, have failed to deliver the performances expected from them.
Head coach Stephen Fleming acknowledged the team’s poor auction decisions, which have not paid off. He admitted that their initial strategy did not provide the expected results and stressed the need for change in their approach moving forward.
Former CSK star Suresh Raina also voiced concerns about the team’s reliance on aging players. He argued that future IPL success would depend on investing in young talent and adjusting to the evolving nature of T20 cricket.
As CSK reflects on a challenging season, the franchise may need to reassess its strategy, focusing on adapting to modern cricket dynamics and rejuvenating its squad with fresh talent to return to contention in future seasons.
