Snapchat Introduces New “Footsteps” Feature for iPhone; Android Support Coming Soon

Snapchat has begun rolling out a new feature called “Footsteps,” which allows users to track their location history and view the places they’ve explored on Snap Map. Initially available only to Snapchat+ subscribers, this feature will soon be accessible to all iPhone users, with Android support expected shortly.

According to TechCrunch, Footsteps shows not only the countries users have visited but also logs the percentage of the area they’ve covered based on where they took Snaps. The feature’s accuracy depends on frequent use of the app. When first using Footsteps, the history is populated with data from Snaps saved in Memories, though future tracking will rely on location data.

Snapchat assures that Footsteps data is private and only visible to the user. It can be disabled by toggling off the “Save new Footsteps as my location updates on the map” option under the Map tab in settings. Users can also clear their location history through the “Clear Footsteps History” option. However, Footsteps will not function when Ghost Mode—an in-app setting that hides location data from friends—is enabled.

The new feature also allows users to share custom stickers based on their travel data. While no specific release date was provided for Android users, the company confirmed that support is coming soon. At its 2024 Partner Summit, Snapchat announced several other updates, including switching between public and private profiles, and an AI-powered lens feature that lets users view a future version of themselves.
